In the quiet hills of Bishoftu in August 2024, a vision that had been flickering for thirty years finally caught fire. As the leadership of Christ for All Ministry gathered to seek God’s direction, the path became remarkably clear. The mandate was simple yet profound: Go North.
But why the North? Why, in a country as vast as Ethiopia, did we identify the northern regions as our initial field of labor? The answer lies in a blend of historical reverence, spiritual necessity, and a deep-seated calling to see the Gospel fully established.
1. A Foundation of Ancient Faith
Northern Ethiopia is the cradle of African Christianity. From the ancient Kingdom of Aksum to the rock-hewn churches of Lalibela, the North has carried the torch of faith for nearly two millennia. It is a land where the Word was translated into Ge’ez in the 5th century and where the story of the Ethiopian Eunuch (Acts 8) is a point of national heritage.
However, a foundation—no matter how ancient—requires constant care. Our mission to the North is a call of reformation and revitalization. We are not bringing a “new” God; we are inviting our brothers and sisters to return to the transformative power of the living Word and a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.
2. The Region of Greatest Need
While the Gospel has deep roots in the North, many communities remain “unreached” in the sense of modern evangelical presence and discipleship. In many areas, faith has become a matter of tradition rather than a life-changing encounter.
Our research and prayer have shown that while the southern regions of Ethiopia have experienced massive evangelical growth over the last century, the North remains a frontier. We go where the laborers are few, answering the call to establish the Gospel in its fullness where it has not yet been adequately rooted.
3. Fulfilling a 1994 Vision
For our Director, Mesfin Tesfaye, and the founding board, the North is not just a strategic choice; it is a spiritual debt. The vision received in 1994 specifically highlighted the northern highlands as a primary mission field. For decades, this vision waited for the “fullness of time.” That time is now. We believe that by beginning here, we are honoring the specific instructions God gave at the ministry’s inception.
4. A Gateway to the Ends of the Earth
The North is strategically significant. It borders diverse ethnic groups and neighboring nations that have yet to hear the Good News. By establishing a strong, Word-based ministry in Northern Ethiopia, we are creating a launchpad.
Our emblem features arrows pointing in every direction for a reason: The North is the beginning, but the World is the goal.
Moving Forward in Faith
The “Northern Call” is more than a strategy; it is a commitment to the Great Commission. As we deploy our first teams, focus our resources, and lift our prayers toward the northern horizons, we invite you to stand with us.
The soil is ready. The vision is clear. The North is calling.
“I heard the voice of the Lord, saying: ‘Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?’ Then I said, ‘Here am I! Send me.'” — Isaiah 6:8
